EVONIK
New stretching and polishing plant in Weiterstadt / Production to start at the end of 2017
On 2 March, the speciality chemicals group Evonik (Essen / Germany; www.evonik.com) broke ground for a new stretching and polishing plant at its Weiterstadt / Germany site. Evonik is investing a two-digit million euro sum in the plant, which will produce the largest stretched PMMA sheets available to date. This investment comes on the heels of Evonik’s mid-February announcement of the construction of a high-grade PMMA production plant in Weiterstadt (see Plasteurope.com of 17.02.2017).
Stretched PMMA sheets have higher impact strength and increased chemical resistance compared to cast PMMA materials, and they satisfy the stringent standards of the aviation industry. The new larger-sized formats make for more efficient production of aircraft and helicopter glazing. The production start of stretched aircraft materials made from "Plexiglas" is scheduled for the end of 2017.
PMMA products, manufactured by the Acrylic Products Business Line of Evonik’s Performance Materials Segment, are sold under the Plexiglas trademark on the European, Asian, African and Australian continents and under the "Acrylite" trademark in the Americas. Evonik has more than 35,000 employees worldwide and had sales of around EUR 12.7 bn in fiscal 2016.
