New PMMA moulding compound for automotive glazing
Evonik (Essen / Germany; www.evonik.com) has introduced “Plexiglas Resist AG 100”, a new polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) special moulding compound to be used in automotive glazing. The company said the material is the world’s first for this particular application and is characterised by resistance against both UV rays and weather conditions and is impact resistant. The developers also said they managed to significantly reduce the reversible clouding that occurs in existing impact-modified products at very high and very low temperatures.

The German company said the material meets all requirements for automotive glazing and has passed the ECE R43 test for rear side, roof and rear windows. The compound can be processed by injection moulding, compression moulding or extrusion followed by thermoforming. It can be used to manufacture PMMA parts that combine several functions, including for example fixed windows with a black cover and a rear light. To date, PMMA has been used mainly in rear light covers and non-transparent parts as well as in the automotive interior.
