Explosion at Italian refinery in Livorno / No injuries reported
An explosion shook Italian oil and gas group Eni’s (Rome; www.eni.com) domestic refinery at Livorno on 30 November 2021. According to local media reports, the resulting fire was put out by fire fighters from Pisa, Lucca and even Florence, which is an hour’s drive away. Plasteurope.com was unable to reach Eni for comment by press time, though media reports say there were no injuries.

The effects of the explosion and fire on production in Livorno are as yet unclear. The refinery, which has a capacity of 105,000 bbl/day of crude oil, gas, lubricants and speciality products, was down for maintenance at the time of the incident. It was originally scheduled to restart at the end of November. There is not yet any information on whether downstream petrochemical units are affected by the explosion. The nearest naphtha crackers are in Porto Torres and Porto Marghera.
