ECOFUT
France: Recovery of plastic barrels
Ecofut (4 rue de Chazelles, F-75017 Paris) is an association which brings together companies involved in the manufacture and use of plastic barrels. It includes firms such as Graham Packaging, Mauser and Schutz, and the resin producers Borealis, Hoechst, BASF, Fina, at least all their French subsidiaries. The organisation, set up in July 1992, promotes the reuse of barrels after cleaning, recycling of the material itself and recycling to energy. In France there are 10m barrels between 20 and 1200 litres, equal to 23,000 t of HDPE. Some 14% of the material is reprocessed, representing 668,000 units. Reuse is more frequent in sizes above 120 litres. Some containers carrying the Ecofut label make more than three trips. The trend is to use larger and larger containers: 120-litres in place of 60-l for example. But, with legislation problems, barrels of 10 to 20 litre are developing more and more. Since the law on industrial packaging makes the final users responsible for disposal of packaging, Ecofut offers to help them comply with the law.
