Construction on mega Texas cracker to start this month / Commissioning in 2017 / Plans for downstream facilities specified
The construction activity related to the US shale gas boom continues. After Chevron Phillips and ExxonMobil’s recent announcements that work on their respective PE lines had begun (for details, see Plasteurope.com of 23.06.2014), Dow (Midland, Michigan / USA; www.dow.com) is now following suit. The US chemical giant has said it will begin construction of its 1.5m t/y ethane cracker in Freeport, Texas on 30 June. The plant is expected to start operations in H1 2017.
The company also provided more details on the downstream units it intends to start up at the site once the cracker is operational (for previous coverage, see Plasteurope.com of 30.08.2013). They include a 200,000 t/y “Nordel” metallocene EPDM line and a 350,000 t/y “Agility” LDPE line for packaging and cable applications in Plaquemine, Louisiana as well as a 400,000 t/y “Elite” LLDPE facility and a 320,000 t/y “Affinity” elastomers plant in Freeport.
