CYCLICS
First commercial plant for reactive PBT in eastern Germany / Output of 2,500 t/y
Cyclics Europe (D-70794 Filderstadt; www.cyclics.com), part of the US Cyclics Corporation (Schenectady, New York), plans to build a EUR 20m production plant for cyclical polybutylene terephthalate (CBT) at the eastern German production complex of BASF Schwarzheide (D-01987 Schwarzheide; www.basf-schwarzheide.de). Cyclics said this will be the first commercial production facility for the reactive thermoplastic system CBT.
The new plant, scheduled to go onstream in early 2004 and create some 51 jobs, will process PBT granules produced at the site into various CBT products. The GE Plastics spin-off has awarded the engineering contract for the new Schwarzheide plant to British-Swiss process plant contractor Davy Process Technology (London / Pratteln; www.dayprotech.com). BASF and GE Plastics operate an 80,000 t/y production facility for PBT at Schwarzheide. CBT products are claimed to combine the advantages of thermoplastics and thermosets. They are used mainly in machinery manufacture and in automotive, sport and leisure applications.
