Timed with the start of the "interplas 2017" (www.interplasuk.com) trade fair in Birmingham / UK, the British Plastics Federation (BPF, London / UK; www.bpf.co.uk) launched several resources on 26 September. These include a website about marine litter, online FAQs and quizzes about marine litter and sustainability as well as informative posters for manufacturing facilities.
BPF's new marine litter website "aims to help inform the public debate about marine litter and highlight the importance of keeping plastic in the recycling stream and out of the environment." The information provided has been collected and referenced from authoritative sources on the various topics, to promote a factual approach instead of misinformation.
The launch of the resources follows a recent YouGov (London; www.yougov.co.uk) survey, which was funded by the BPF. Over 2,000 UK respondents were asked to guess the percentage of marine plastics litter that comes from Europe and the US combined. 49% believed the two regions account for more than half of marine litter globally, however, Europe and the US total only 2% – the correct answer range (1-5%) was selected by 1% of those surveyed. The survey also asked what would encourage people to recycle more when away from home. 58% favoured more recycling bins in public places and 16% thought a deposit return scheme would help.
