Approval for PET recycling plant in northeastern UK
Waste management company Biffa (High Wycombe / UK; www.biffa.co.uk) has received approval by Durham county authorities for its new PET bottle recycling plant – see Plasteurope.com of 29.11.2018. The GBP 15m (EUR 17m) facility will be constructed on the UK's east coast at Seaham, which is around 20 km south of Newcastle. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-2019 and expected to last 18 months.

The new facility for 25,000 t/y of food-grade rPET is to create 70 full-time jobs. Biffa's plant is expected to process 3m bottles each day into food and drink packaging. Managing director of resource, recovery and treatment at Biffa Mick Davis said the facility supports the UK's plans to find new ways to reuse plastics. He noted that the country uses around "13.5 bn plastic bottles a year but can only process half of this, with the rest diverted to landfill or overseas."
