The lure of doing business in China is still strong appparently as US-based automotive supplier Johnson Controls (JCI, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; www.johnsoncontrols.com) most recently demonstrated when it announced plans to build 11 production plants in China over the next three years.
"We are focusing on innovative complete interior solutions in China that anticipate market needs and meet customer expectations in terms of differentiation, comfort, safety, and sustainability,” explained Johannes Roters, general manager in China, Johnson Controls Automotive Experience. "Out of all international suppliers, our company has the strongest presence in China and has a comprehensive product portfolio with vertical integration and efficient processes. In addition, we are the industry leader in industrial design and development,” Roters continued.
Since beginning operations in 1997 in China, JCI has continually grown and expanded to include 57 production sites in 27 Chinese cities and is involved in 32 joint ventures with 27 strategic partners. Two of the largest partnerships involve Shanghai Yanfeng Johnson Controls (seating systems, headliners) and Changchun Faway (seating systems, interiors). According to JCI, 37 sites focus on seating and seating components, seven locations on interiors, ten plants produce both seating components and interior components and three plants make products for the automotive electronics area. The Midwestern company employs more than 25,000 people in China and shows no signs of stopping its expansion in the near future with the number of production sites expected to grow to 68 in the next few years. In addition to its production sites, the company also has ten engineering locations in eight cities.
In fiscal year 2012, the global supplier of automotive seating, seating components electronics and interiors recorded sales in China of approximately USD 4.6 bn (EU 3.6 bn). Worldwide, JCI has more than 168,000 employees working at 240 locations.
French automotive supplier Plastic Omnium (Levallois; www.plasticomnium.com) is another company with visions of strengthening its position in Asia. At the end of 2011, the plastic fuel tanks manufacturer said it would also add 11 new production sites in China – see Plasteurope.com of 20.12.2011.
