RecyClass approval for three PET bottle UV barrier additives
By Plasteurope.com correspondent

US specialist for surface coatings, additives, and compounds Avient (Avon Lake, Ohio; www.avient.com) announced that three of its UV barrier formulations for PET bottles have received recyclability approval from plastics recovery audit scheme RecyClass (Brussels; www.recyclass.eu). According to RecyClass, the additives are compatible with PET-bottle recycling streams in Europe.

The three grades approved include two Cesa Light additives and one ColorMatrix Ultimate UV barrier. The materials were developed in order to protect PET packaging and its contents from the degradation effects of light and UV radiation, according to Avient.

Germany’s Institut für Kunststofftechnologie & -recycling (IKTR, Weissandt-Gölzau; www.iktr-online.de) conducted independent testing following an adapted version of the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol for PET bottles.

IKTR’s results showed no adverse effects of the UV formulations on the recycling process and established that the additives do not cause yellowing after reclaim.

The RecyClass approval is valid as long as the amount of additive remains below 0.15% of the total weight of the packaging.
