Launch of flame-retardant PA-based compound / Safer electrical connectors in home appliances
US producer Ascend Performance Materials (Houston, Texas; has launched a flame-retardant compound based on PA 6.6 that it said will enhance the safety of electrical connectors used in unattended home appliances.

In addition to excellent electrical and flammability properties, “Vydyne” FR350J is said to have high ductility and elongation at break (15%), providing engineers with greater freedom in designing parts such as living hinges and snap fits. Ascend added that the compound has superior melt flow and requires lower pressure to fill moulds, reducing cycle times and production costs. The resin is also colour stable for both natural and colourable applications.

Ascend’s vice president of technology, Vikram Gopal, said, “Home appliances are getting smarter and demand for these so-called ‘smart’ products continues to grow. That means they will incorporate more electronics and more connectors. Vydyne FR350J will make sure that appliances are safe as well as smart.”

The compound was showcased at the “Fakuma” ( trade fair held in Friedrichshafen / Germany, on 17-21 October.
