Recyclable TPU for one-shot and glue-less production of footwear soles
Italian thermoplastic elastomeric compounds and bioplastics producer Applicazioni Plastiche Industriali (API, Mussolente; www.apiplastic.com) has launched a recyclable TPU that enables one-shot and glue-less production of footwear soles.

API said its “Apilon 52 A/C” series offers an “outstanding” combination of soft touch, aesthetics and lightness along with very high abrasion resistance, comparable with rubber according to the DIN 53516 test method. In addition, the TPU can reduce production cycle time by up to 70% compared to thermosetting materials such as vulcanised rubber and EVA. A second TPU material, “Apilon 52 Light”, is said to be best suited to producing midsoles due to its velvet and natural haptic characteristics.

Both materials, said API, enable a one-shot solution for dual density/bi-component soles in a single production step. In addition, no glue needs to be used in the bonding process. As a result, the TPU’s reduce the costs associated with equipment such as moulds and simplify the labour-intensive assembling procedure. Giancarlo Busa, business unit manager footwear, said the fully recyclable “Apilon” series will help the company to extend its already strong offer in luxury footwear and to compete in the athletic and professional segments.

API was acquired by US styrenic plastics and synthetic rubber producer Trinseo (Berwyn, Pennsylvania; www.trinseo.com) in July 2017 – see Plasteurope.com of 13.07.2017.
