Austrian packaging group Alpla (Hard; www.alpla.com) has announced the acquisition of South African packaging manufacturer Verigreen Packaging (Durban; www.verigreen.co.za). Details of the deal were not disclosed. The Durban-based company specialises in bottles and canisters for lubricants such as engine oils, and employs 25 people, who are now employed by the Austrian group after the takeover. “Alpla is taking over 100% of Verigreen Packaging, the legal entity and the people remain in full and keep operating under the same and entity,” a group spokesperson told Plasteurope.com.

With the acquisition, Alpla says it is growing its involvement in the region. In 2017, the Austrian group acquired Boxmore Packaging (Samrand / South Africa; www.boxmore.co.za), a leading producer of PET preforms, PET bottles and closures (see Plasteurope.com of 11.07.2017).

As part of a consolidation of its activities in the area, Alpla is building a production facility and a regional head office in Lanseria near Johannesburg (see Plasteurope.com of 18.03.2020). With over 21,000 employees and 178 production facilities in 45 countries, the Austrian group reported a turnover of EUR 3.69 bn in 2020. In the Sub-Saharan Africa region, Alpla employs roughly 600 people.
