Development of guidelines to assess quality of recycled LDPE / Collaboration with Belgian research centre / Emans: “First step to circularity”
Industry association Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE, Brussels / Belgium; www.plasticsrecyclers.eu) has issued a document that sets out guidelines for assessing the quality and characterisation of recycled LDPE pellets, providing an information benchmark to purchasers. The association said the move is aimed at enhancing demand for recycled plastics by standardising methods to evaluate quality based on EU specifications.
PRE collaborated with Belgian plastics processing research centre VKC-Centexbel (Kortrijk; www.centexbel.be), which tested the pellets and used the results to determine the best available techniques for assessing the quality of the recyclate.
“Setting a scientifically grounded benchmark for quality of recycled LDPE pellets is the first step towards plastic circularity as conceived by the EU plastics strategy [see Plasteurope.com of 28.05.2018],” said Ton Emans, PRE president and chairman of the LDPE working group. “Clear and transparent standards give greater confidence in the value of recyclates and thus enhance demand for recycled plastic. This initiative improves the transparency and credibility of recycled plastics.”
PRE said it aims to develop further European standardisations and assessments of pellet quality for other types of plastics and specific end-uses.
