PLASTIC FANTASTIC
(Recycled) islands in the stream
Originally envisioned as a plastics recycling project that would collect marine debris in the Pacific vortex and use it to build an entirely new island (see Plasteurope.com of 16.07.2010), the brains behind the Recycled Island Foundation have lowered their goals somewhat. The latest initiative to be proposed by the Dutch group is to catch plastic waste floating through the Nieuwe Maas River before it hits the Atlantic. The waste is to be reused to build floating green platforms that will serve as relaxation spots along the river, dotting the city of Rotterdam.

Whether the project can be realised remains to be seen. There is, however, no question about the fact that most people would rather suntan on islands made of reclaimed plastic than relax on the shores of a waste-contaminated stream.
