PLASTIC FANTASTIC
The 3D printer and the empresses' new clothes
How the times have changed. In the 20th century, when you printed your own dress, you were referring to dipping a store-bought garment in paint, and imprinting it with your own batik. In the 21st century, you can actually print your own dress. Using a new 3D software, design studio Nervous Systems has printed a dress that moves like real fabric. At USD 3,000 per piece, and with a printing time of two days, it is still a far cry from mass production, but just imagine how much space could be saved by having a wardrobe stacked with polymer mass as opposed to clothes, and being able to redesign an outfit every day.

Another benefit of the new technology: by using 3D scans of the person that will eventually wear the garment, the printer ensures a perfect fit. That trait alone would make the start of the day a lot happier for women across the globeā€¦
