BASF
Expansion of PBT portfolio / Carbon fibre-reinforced Ultradur now available / Automotive industry targeted
German chemicals major BASF (Ludwigshafen; www.basf.com) has added its first carbon fibre-reinforced „Ultradur" to its polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) portfolio. With a low electrostatic charge and good conductivity, the product is suitable for components in sensitive measurement areas and control technology for machines and automotive electronics. The company says the anti-static properties mean that less dust or dirt adheres to a component, and in hazardous areas with the potential for explosions, the use of the conductive Ultradur grade reduces the risk of electrostatic loading and possible sparking.

BASF added that parts made of the carbon fibre-reinforced engineering plastic retain their anti-static property permanently even after contact with media such as fuels and at high temperatures. The "Performance Materials" division of the company targeted its new carbon fibre-reinforced PBT for parts in cars or machines with gases or fluids flowing through, fast-moving components in textile machines or conveyor belt elements that are subject to static charge due to friction. Other fields of usage include machines in paper processing, printers, and transportation packaging for sensitive electronic goods requiring electrostatic discharge protection.

The material of the new PBT, which is now available in commercial quantities, is reinforced with 15% carbon fibre and has a low volume and surface resistance. It absorbs very little water, is laser-markable, and its mechanical properties are similar to a standard PBT with 30% glass fibres. In addition, Ultradur B4300 C3 can be easily combined with other PBT grades, through welding or bonding, and is also suitable for complex, thin-walled components.
