Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE, Brussels / Belgium; www.plasticsrecyclers.eu) has come out in support of the “European Strategy on plastic waste”, adopted by the members of the European Parliament on 14 January – see Plasteurope.com of 20.01.2014.
“The voted report is a further step towards market changes that have been pushed by the political representatives of EU citizens. In this report the members of the European Parliament have perfectly understood the issues limiting plastics recycling,” said PRE's president, Ton Emans. He added the move paves the way for the European Commission to “make ambitious legislative proposals, which will enable an enhanced sustainability for plastics products.”
The association also welcomed the fact that the report highlights the challenges posed by bioplastics, especially the need to evaluate the sustainability of bio-sourced materials and the necessity to have EU-wide end-of-life solutions for biodegradable plastics.
