"Plastivision Arabia 2014" set for April in Sharjah / "GPCA PlastiCon" during the exhibition
Before temperatures begin to heat up in the UAE, organisers are busy getting ready for the second edition of the biennial international trade exibition, "Plastivision Arabia" (www.plastivision.ae), from 7-10 April at the Expo Centre Sharjah north of Dubai. Once again, the event will be held in conjunction with "Arabia Mold" and is organised by the All India Plastics Manufacturers’ Association (AIPMA, Mumbai; www.aipma.net). Organisers are expecting more than 153 exhibitors from 66 countries this year.
In addition, the fifth annual "GPCA PlastiCon" will be convening from 7-9 April as part of the overall exhibition. The conference focuses on the growth of plastics conversion both globally and in the GCC countries. GPCA PlastiCon 2014 is highlighting the key role of innovation in market and product development. Sponsors for the upcoming conference include regionally based players Sabic, Borouge and Sipchem.
Registering only a blip 50 years ago on the international industry scene, plastics in the Middle East represent one of the most ubiquitous raw materials used in a wide variety of industries ranging from construction, automotive, packaging, electrical & electronics, appliances to medical products – see Plasteurope.com of 14.01.2014. In the last decade alone, the region has quickly emerged as an important player in the global market owing to the twin benefits of low raw material and feedstock prices and proximity to the highly lucrative Asian markets such as India and China. No wonder then that the majority of exhibitors at the inaugural event were from the Indian subcontinent.
Analysts predict the regional plastics industry to record annual growth of 30% over the next five years, making it the fastest growth rate in the world. In addition, annual petrochem and plastics production among the Gulf states is expected to jump around 46% to 155m t/y by 2015, up from the current 105m t/y, attracting investments of roughly USD 55 bn. The UAE currently produces 3.4m t/y of petrochemicals and plastics and the number is expected to more than double to 7.8m t/y by 2015.
