SMS PLASTICS TECHNOLOGY
Battenfeld Group: Sales in excess of EUR 500m / Expansion in extrusion technology
At SMS Plastics Technology – Battenfeld Group (HQ: D-58540 Meinerzhagen) – sales increased to EUR 522m for the first time in the 1999/2000 financial year (30.6). Considerable increases were achieved in Extrusion Technology, in particular, thanks to the acquisition of Cincinnati Extrusion (A-1239 Vienna), on the one hand, and internal growth, on the other. This division accounted for 67% of orders, which amounted to EUR 524.6m in all, while injection moulding made up 37% – also showing slight growth in sales according to SMS managing board member Dr. Helmut Eschwey.
The company is planning to expand its leading market position in extrusion technology still further (see Plasteurope.com 19, 2000). Injection moulding technology – whose sale failed spectacularly at the start of the year (see Plasteurope.com 1, 2000 and 2, 2000) – is now evidently being treated like a stepchild. When questioned, Board Chairman Heinrich Weiss told journalists that, while the company was interested in Mannesmann Demag Krauss-Maffei AG (MDKM, D-80997 Munich), an overall acquisition would be just too much for SMS. He did not exclude the acquisition of certain parts of the company, although this scarcely seemed realistic for SMS.
