New infrared optical sorting line for French Bayonne plant / EUR 1.2m investment
Sita France (Nanterre / France; www.sita.fr) in mid-June started up a new optical high-tech plastics recycling line at its site in Bayonne. Located in what was once a plant operated by Sony, the EUR 1.2m line uses infrared sensors to sort PET scrap from other plastics, including HDPE, PVC and PP, and is capable of separating bottles of different colours.
Aside from raising Sita’s capacity in Bayonne to 17,000 t/y or 500m PET bottles a year, the installation also reduces maintenance costs, the company said. The new line has seen the recycler add 32 jobs at the facility, located in the southwest of France. The clean rPET material produced by the plant goes into a number of applications, including fibres, carpets as well as new bottles and food containers.
Sita first acquired the Bayonne plant in 2004. Since then, the company has invested about EUR 4m in the 41,000 m² plant, which reportedly generates a turnover of EUR 11m. Aside from the Bayonne facility, Sita operates four additional recycling plants in France.
