SIEGWERK
Coatings and inks supplier forms circular product portfolio / Collaboration yields mono-material pet-food packaging
By Plasteurope.com correspondent

German printing inks and coatings manufacturer Siegwerk (Sieburg; www.siegwerk.com) said it has bundled its circular coating solutions under a new product portfolio it calls Cirkit.

The portfolio includes:
  • Cirkit Oxybar, an oxygen barrier coating that guarantees extended shelf life particularly for dry food processing,
  • Cirkit Greasebar, an oil and grease resistant barrier coating,
  • Cirkit Uvbar, a barrier coating protecting against UV light,
  • Cirkit Clearprime, which allows smooth deinking of hardly deinkable surface printed structures and laminates,
  • Cirkit HeatGuard, a coating for high-end sealing process efficiency that can be applied in-line with regular flexographic or gravure machines.
The company said it plans to register the brand as a trademark.
Mono-material for better recyclability
Siegwerk said it has also collaborated with compatriot printing machinery maker Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H, Lengerich; www.wh.group/int) and compatriot bag making and printing machine maker B&B Verpackungstechnik (Hopsten; www.bub-group.com/en) in the successful development of a fully recyclable high-barrier mono-material polyethylene bag for dry pet food using its Cirkit functional coatings.

The pet food packaging incorporates Siegwerk’s solvent-based Cirkit Greasebar and Cirkit HeatGuard coatings, which are fully deinkable after delamination and can be printed in-line without any loss in print performance.

Pet food packaging is commonly produced from complex multi-material structures with a metallised layer that are not recyclable, Siegwerk said.

The jointly produced mono-material bag offers the same packaging and process performance as the multi-material structure, but is also fully recyclable, Siegwerk said.
