Development of alternatives for PEI
US custom engineered thermoplastics compounder RTP (Winona, Minnesota; www.rtpcompany.com) is producing a range of resins with reinforcements and fillers to meet applications that are traditionally catered for through the employment of PEI (polyetherimide), a high temperature polymer with high dimensional stability, chemical resistance, strength, stiffness, inherent flame retardancy and creep resistance.

The amorphous materials, based on sulfone, and semi-crystalline materials like PPA, PPS and PEEK, can be compounded by the company for a range of applications. RTP said its materials specialists will review requirements and provide an alternative solution to PEI, while considering morphology, physical properties, the environment and flame retardancy.

Sabic Innovative Plastics (Sabic IP, Bergen op Zoom / The Netherlands; www.sabic-ip.com) is the world's only PEI producer, with plants in Spain and the US (see aso Plasteurope.com of 27.09.2010).
