POUCHES
US demand expected to approach USD 9 bn in 2016 / New Freedonia study
US demand for pouches is expected to increase by more than 5% annually to a value of USD 8.8 bn, with unit demand expanding 3% per year to 90 bn, says market research group Freedonia (Cleveland, Ohio / USA; www.freedonia.com) in its new study, “Pouches”. The market for stand-up pouches in particular is being driven by consumer acceptance as an alternative to rigid packaging, the researchers note. Here, demand is forecast to expand by more than 7% annually up to 2016 to a value of USD 2 bn.
Freedonia believes advances in stand-up pouches will be “well above” those of the packaging industry overall, thanks to the pouches’ lighter weight and lower material use compared with rigid containers. Demand for flat pouches is seen as increasing by 4.5% over the five-year period to USD 6.8 bn, fuelled by above-average gains for four-side seal pouches used in medical, pharmaceutical and food applications.
