PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Pricey prop goes up in smoke
Printed and retouched: Aston Martin "DB5" (Foto: Propshop) |
When the gleaming silver Aston Martin “DB5” driven by Daniel Craig in the latest James Bond flick "Skyfall" – battered with bullets and grenades – is consumed by a ball of fire, the hearts of vintage car aficionados collectively sink.
At least the uninitiated among them. Those familiar with Hollywood’s tricks know it’s “only plastic.” The car was one of three 3-D printed DB5 replicas made in Germany (how unbondlike!) and delivered as props to the film set.
Even if the copies don’t fetch anywhere near the GBP 1.5m recently paid for a 1962 DB4 Series IV Vantage Convertible once owned by Sir Peter Ustinov, one of the German 3-D models recently came under the hammer at Christie’s for around USD 100,000.
That’s still a pricey prop to go up in smoke!
