PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Who needs a bottle when you got a blob?

Forget about bio-PET or plant bottles. While the plastics industry is busy coming up with ever greener packaging solutions, three industrial design students have come up with “Ooho!”, an edible compound made of brown algae and calcium chloride that creates a gel around water, sealing it inside what might best be described as a blob. Production costs are low – reportedly only 2 cents per blob.
What remains unclear is how one can hygienically store the edible membrane containing water, or whether it can truly resist being carried around in a bag containing comparatively sharp objects like pens. If the bubble bursts at an inopportune moment, one might have saved the environment a PET bottle, but could lose a phone, a presentation or the entire bag.
