"PackTheFuture" winners announced / Initial sustainable packaging competition at "Interpack" well received
The 12 winners of the inaugural PackTheFuture awards were recently announced by the German Association for Plastic Packaging and Films (IK, Bad Homburg; www.kunststoffverpackungen.de) and the French Plastic and Flexible Packaging Association (Elipso, Paris; www.elipso.org) in conjunction with "Interpack 2014" in Düsseldorf, held from 8-14 May (www.interpack.com) – see Plasteurope.com of 20.05.2014.

Making its debut at the triennial trade event, the competition was open to members of the two professional organisations and aims to promote creativity and innovation in sustainable plastic and flexible packaging. Winners were recognised in three categories.

In the “Ecodesign” category, which promoted environmentally friendly innovation throughout a product’s life cycle – from choice of raw materials through to functionality at the consumer end – the winners were Linpac Packaging (Featherstone / UK; www.linpac.com), Appe Deutschland (Mendig / Germany), Global Closure Systems (Saint Cloud Cedex / France; www.gcs.com) and Mauser-Werke (Brühl / Germany; www.mauser-group.com).

For “Product Protection”, which focused on innovation that enhances content protection from filling through to end user, French nominees finished strong – including the French arms of Promens (Reykjavik / Iceland; www.promens.com) and Sealed Air (Elmwood Park, New Jersey / USA; www.sealedair.com) and Ozembal (Noeux-les-Mines / France; www.ozembal.com) with a lone German winner rounding out the category, Philippine GmbH & Co Technische Kunstoffe (Lahnstein; www.philippine.de).

Finally “Social Benefit” winners included two German companies – Wipak Walsrode (Walsrode; www.wipak.com) and the German arm of Aptar Beauty + Home (Crystal Lake, Illinois / USA; www.aptargroup.com) and from France, Groupe Guillin (Ornans; www.groupeguillin.fr). The three companies were selected for innovation which meets new consumer trends and expectations or offers new uses within a target group such as children or the elderly.

The French arm of Greif (Delaware, Ohio / USA; www.greif.com) was given a special award by the jury for its PackH20 innovation.
