First "World Medtech Forum Lucerne" / Gathering of Swiss medical supply industry / Highly efficient industry sector
Some 240 international medical supply firms will present their portfolio at the first ever "World Medtech Forum Lucerne" (WMTF; www.medtech-forum.ch), held from 25-27 September 2012 in Lucerne / Switzerland. The three-day event, organised by the Medical Cluster (Bern / Switzerland; www.medical-cluster.ch) and Messe Luzern (Lucerne / Switzerland; www.messeluzern.ch), combines an exhibition with conferences, workshops and meetings. Spread out over the three days, the conference will focus on executives, Europe and Asia, with each session followed by a workshop. According to the organisers, 140 Swiss medical supply companies have already registered. Further exhibitors will come from Germany, Austria and Canada.

Each of the three conference days is set under a special motto: the first day, called "Executive Day", will focus on global challenges and new business models. Wednesday, 26 September, is "European Day", focusing on European challenges, managing complexity and problem solving. On the last, the "Asian Day", participants will discuss such issues as Asian opportunities and Asian competition.

The Swiss medical technology industry has a market volume of CHF 22.9 bn (about EUR 19 bn) and generates 2% of the country's GDP. Switzerland is considered to be the country with the highest density of medical technology companies in Europe. With a total of 49,000 employees (outlook 2013: 55,000), more than 700 companies are producing medical devices, instruments and consumables for the entire world. About 3% of the industry's turnover is said to be invested in research and development, with 69% of total turnover generated from exports.

In recent years, the exports of medical products have reached the same level as that of the watch industry, accounting for about 5% of Swiss exports. Many major international companies have found Switzerland to be an excellent manufacturing location, thanks to what is really the backbone of the Swiss medical technology industry: the highly efficient supply sector.
