New business in specialty products in its high performance polymers business helped Ems Group (Domat / Switzerland; www.ems-group.com) achieve a 7% year-on-year increase in operating profit (EBIT) to CHF 167m (EUR 139m) in the first half of 2012. Sales increased by 4% compared with the first six months of 2011, to CHF 904m.
Operating profit in the high performance polymers business rose by over 8% year-on-year to CHF 139m, on sales up 6% at CHF 754m. The company said its market positions were strengthened worldwide, in particular in applications in the optical industry, the smartphone market and automotive industry.
Geographically, in the US and Asia, increased efforts in recent years led to significant growth in sales and profit. In Europe, the anticipated decline in industry slowed business development.
In both polymers and Ems’ secondary business area, specialty chemicals, high raw material prices and unfavourable foreign exchange affected otherwise positive developments in sales and operating profit, the company said.
