Israel Chemicals starts commercial-scale production of “FR-122P” polymeric flame retardant / European phase-out by 21 August
The Building Solutions division of US chemicals giant Dow (Midland, Michigan; www.dow.com) has announced that Israel Chemicals (ICL, Tel Aviv / Israel; www.icl-group.com) has commenced commercial-scale production of its “FR-122P” polymeric flame retardant. The two companies had signed a licensing agreement for the materials in 2012 – see Plasteurope.com of 30.01.2012.
Commenting on the start-up, Francisco José Gonçalves, commercial director at Dow Building Solutions Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, said, “We are confident that the additional capacity of the FR-122P Polymeric Flame Retardant from ICL-IP will enable extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) and expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) manufacturers to adopt the new technology in time for the August 2015 HBCD phase-out deadline set by the European Union.” Use of HBCD flame retardants will be banned in the European Union from 21 August this year (see Plasteurope.com of 16.07.2012).
