Latest polymeric flame retardant licence illustrates increased substitution of HBCD in insulation foam / Smooth transition to REACH norms
Dow Global Technologies (DGTL, Midland, Michigan / USA; www.dow.com) recently awarded a second licence for its new polymeric flame retardant technology to Bromine Compounds Ltd, part of ICL Industrial Products (ICL-IP, Beer Sheva / Israel; www.icl-ip.com) – see Plasteurope.com of 30.01.2012 – illustrating the increased substitution of HBCD.
DGTL launched the new stable, high molecular weight, non-PBT (Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic) flame retardant in March 2011 in response to the regulatory restrictions on hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) products mandated by the EU’s REACH legislation and several other national regulations. Shortly afterward, it awarded the first licence to leading flame retardant producer Chemtura (Middleburg, Connecticut / USA; www.chemtura.com) – see Plasteurope.com of 05.04.2011.
The Dow Chemical subsidiary said its licensees have planned large plants to come on stream in the coming years. This will enable the global PS insulation foam sector to make a smooth transition as HBCD restrictions are implemented globally.
