Upgrading PTA plants in Belgium and the US / New technology to improve cost competitiveness and reduce environmental footprint
BP (London / UK; www.bp.com) is investing more than USD 200m in an upgrade of its PTA plants in Geel / Belgium and Cooper River, South Carolina / USA. The facilities, with nameplate capacity for about 1.3m t/y each, will be fitted with the group’s latest technology, improving cost competitiveness and reducing their environmental footprints, BP said. The investment will “position these assets amongst the most efficient PTA manufacturing facilities in the world,” the group added.
The company did not say whether the upgrade of the polyester feedstock plants will also mean a rise in output. While the PTA3 unit in Geel is to be upgraded by the end of 2015, the site’s PTA2 unit is set to follow in 2016. In Cooper River, the upgrade of PTA1 is expected to be completed by mid-2016.
BP produces about 7.1m t/y of PTA at seven different locations, making it one of the world’s largest manufacturers of the polyester feedstock.
