BAYER MATERIALSCIENCE
Exhibiting as Covestro at Fakuma / First time new name will be used / PC composites added to portfolio
For the first time at a major international trade show, Bayer MaterialScience (BMS, Leverkusen / Germany; www.bayerbms.com) will exhibit under its new name, Covestro, at this year’s "Fakuma" trade fair (www.fakuma-messe.de). Also in the spotlight at the show to be held from 13-17 October in Friedrichshafen / Germany will be the portfolio of lightweight polycarbonate composites developed by the company’s new subsidiary Thermoplast Composite (TCG, Langenfeld / Germany; www.thermoplast-composite.com).
Acquired by BMS earlier this year for an undisclosed sum – see Plasteurope.com of 05.03.2015 – the plastics converter specialises in the production of unidirectional thermoplastic composites. BMS / Covestro is already active in the development and marketing of composite solutions based on polyurethane systems. With the takeover of TCG, it has added polycarbonate composites, primarily for the automotive, transport and IT industries, to the portfolio. Strong demand from the consumer goods sector is also expected for the thermoplastic materials reinforced with continuous fibre.
The new materials to be marketed under the Covestro name are particularly thin and lightweight, and the solutions produced so far offer properties superior to those of existing solutions based on aluminium, for example, said Olaf Zöllner, technical manager of the composite business. They are also robust, freely formable, easy to process and capable of being recycled multiple times, he added.
Also on display at the Covestro booth in Friedrichshafen, which also will highlight colour effects developed at the company’s colour competence & design centres, are new developments for automotive and transport applications including electric mobility. Additional highlights will be polyurethane systems, thermoplastic polyurethanes and the use of polycarbonate films.
