BASF
Freeport chosen as location for potential mammoth methanol-to-propylene complex / Board still has to give final approval
The plans of German chemicals producer BASF (Ludwigshafen; www.basf.com) to build a world-scale methane-to-propylene complex on the US Gulf Coast are beginning to take more shape (for previous coverage, see Plasteurope.com of 05.05.2014). The company has now chosen Freeport, Texas, as the potential site and has contracted Air Liquide (Paris / France; www.airliquide.fr) as the basic service provider. The French group will also make available its “Lurgi MegaMethanol” and “Methanol-to-Propylene” technologies for the hub.
The plant, which still has to meet the final approval of BASF’s executive board – scheduled to be forthcoming in 2016 – would be capable of turning out 475,000 t/y of propylene. If realised, the project will allow BASF to take advantage of the low US gas prices – a result of the shale gas revolution.
